Portrait

Born in Montreal: 1938 09 20

McGill Law: B.C.L. 1959

Admitted to the practice of law in 1960, Jean practiced law with the firm Ahern, de Brabant, Nuss & Drymer until 1976, working in many fields, including family law, criminal law, real estate and international finance, in both England and Germany.

In 1973 Jean became a consultant in the real estate field, then a developer after 1976.

Jean realized many restoration projects in old Montreal, through the late 70s and early 80s.

In 1980, he purchased the bankrupt department store, Dupuis Frères, and transformed it into Les Atriums, an award winning 8 story office building, featuring two giant 8 story atriums, with waterfalls and flowering plants.

In 1987, Jean conceived and built Tropics North, a 120 apartment condominium building, next to Habitat 67 in Montreal. All apartments in Tropics North benefit from private terraces opening on to a giant 12 story climate controlled greenhouse.

The greenhouse features year round bougainvillea, hibiscus, banana trees, 100 foot palm trees; as well as streams and waterfalls. Wytold Rybyszinski, the celebrated American architectural critic, described Tropics North as a 'Hawaiian Paradise' in the February 9th 1992, Sunday New York Times.

During those years, Jean developed Le Territoire des lacs, a haven of peace comprising over 5,500 acres between Lachute and Morin Heights in Quebec, offering private access to over 10 lakes, with more than 2,000 acres of common areas

From 1991 to 1993, Jean engaged in documentary simplification for clients such as Canadian Pacific, Standard Life, Pratt & Whitney, L'Air Liquide and the Laurentian Bank.

Since 1993 and because of the death of his half-brother François Tisseyre, Jean has produced over 100 biographical films, in which one or more protagonists tell the illustrated story of their family to their family members. His subjects include Celia Franca, the founder of the National Ballet of Canada, Irving Layton, the poet, as well as professional and business people, such as Peter Blaikie, Charles Bronfman, Leo Kolber, Heward Stikeman, Lorne Webster, Red Wilson and many others.

Jean started learning poetry for cultural reasons in 1996. Seven years later he found he was developing a low grade photographic memory; and five years after that he realized, to his astonishment that his memory had tripled and is still growing! Trying to understand the reason for this increase, he realized that it was because of the memory training, which learning poetry constituted.

Since then he has given talks on memory. All persons of 50 years and over suffer from memory loss and we all need to train our memory in order to reverse the process.

Jean lives in Montreal and Stowe, Vermont, with his wife Hilary Radley. He has 5 children and as many grand-children.

Jean writes and speaks several languages. A ski and tennis enthusiast, he has performed an annual triathlon since 1990.

His principal charitable cause is the Canadian Anti-malaria Coalition, which raises money for the acquisition and distribution by the Red Cross of insecticide treated mosquito nets, with a 5 year effective life.

The Coalition has caused over 22,000 net to be remitted to the Red Cross to African mothers for the protection of their babies against malaria. In order to receive a net, the mother must bring the baby in order to be vaccinated against ... and polio, two of the other great afflictions which kill more than a million African babies a year.

  • If you wish to send a mosquito net to an African mother for her and her baby, you need only follow the link to the Canadian Red Cross lamalariapique.net site and click on 'Faites un don'. Each gift of $7.00 provides a net for an African baby. This year the campaign will take place in the Congo. We will keep you informed of the results on this site.
